ncrisis.ItbringstogethertheLeagueofArabStates(LAS)zArabWaterCouncil(AWC),UnitedNationsDevelopmentProgramme(UNDP),UnitedNationsEnvironmentProgramme-FinanceInitiative(UNEPFI),WorldFoodProgramme(WFP),UnitedNationsOfficeforDisasterReduction(UNDRR),andUnitedNationsHumanSettlementsProgramme(UN-Habitat),todeliverclimate-orientedsolutionsthataddressclimatechallengesandbringco-benefitsacrosstheSDGs.Indoingsozitaimstoscaleupaccesstoanddeliveryofclimatefinance,includingthroughinnovativepartnershipswiththeprivatesector.ArabFutureEnergyIndex(AFEX)2023RegionalCenterforRenewableEnergyandEnergyEfficiency(RCREEE)RCREEEJf6RctfyMl(三*M'.<rhwlhJI0<laS4wiaJplhliiSolArabFutureEnergyIndex2023RCREEEForewordSustainableenergyisacrucialinputforsocioeconomicandsustainabledevelopmentintheArabregion.Securinggoodaccesstoaffordableenergyisessentialforalleviatingpovertyandenhancingeconomicactivities.Renewableenergyandenergyefficiencyareessentialmeasurestomitigateclimatechange,reducefossilfuelconsumptionandimproveenergysecurityaswellasenergyaccess,especiallyinthelesselectrifiedcountries.Arabcountriesareendowedwithhugeuntappedrenewableenergyresourcesaswellasplentyopportunitiesforenergyefficiency.Atthesametime,thecostsofenergyfromrenewableenergysourcesaredecliningrapidly,whiletheefficiencyofthetechnologiesarealsocontinuallyadvancing.Duringthelastfew,manyArabcountriessetambitioustargetsforrenewableenergyandenergyefficiency.TheshareofinstalledcapacityforrenewableenergyprojectisincreasinginmanyArabcountries.Apartfromthehydropower,isthelargestshareofenergygenerationinspecificArabcountries,thethreetoptechnologiesarephotovoltaics,windenergyandconcertedsolarpower(CSP),whichhavemoredeploymentandmajorcontributionindiversifyingtheenergymixintheArabcountries.Astheenergysectoristhemajorcontributortogreenhousegasemissions,adoptingplansforglobalenergytransitionbecomesnecessarytocutoutharmfulemissionsandphaseoutfossilfuel.Thiswillnotbepossibleunlessthereisahigh-levelmmitmenttothetothedeploymentofmorerenewableenergyandenergyefficiencysolutions.Tomakeoptimaluseofrenewableenergysources,thereisalsoaneedtodevelopandupgradeelectricityinfrastructuretoaccommodatetheadditionalcapacitiesOfrenewableenergysources.Forthefirsttime,andinlightofthelonglastingpartnershipwiththeUNPD,thiseditionofAFEXcoversthethreeP川arsofsustainableenergyforall:RenewableEnergy,EnergyEfficiencyandElectricityAccess,assessingtheprogressin20Arabcountries,undermorethan40indicatorsfocusedmainlyonpoliciesandstrategies,institutionalandtechnicalcapacities,andinvestmentenvironment.AFEXisbecominganeffectivetoolforthepolicymakersintheArabregiontoevaluateandcomparetheprogressoftheircountrieswiththeothercountriesintheregionandmakethenecessaryreformstoprogressandachievetheirnationaltargets.IbelievethatourcontinuouscooperationwiththeUNDPandourMemberStates,willcontinuetomakeasignificantcontributiontotheeffortsOfassessingenergytransitionprocessesintheArabregion.Dr.JauadElKharrazExecutiveDirector,RCREEEArabFutureEnergyIndex2023UNDPForewordClimatechangepresentsthesinglebiggestthreattosustainabledevelopmentandcouldwellleadtoareversalofdevelopmentgainsbymid-century.Butclimateactionalsostandsasamajoropportunityforcountriestotransitiontoalowcarbon,sustainableenergyeconomy.ThisisparticularlyimportantfortheArabregion.Whileholdingtheworld,shighestlevelsofsolarradiation,theregiontodatehasmadeonlymodestprogressinexpandingtheshareofrenewableenergyinitsenergymixzcurrentlystandingataround7%.Thisisstartingtochange,withpositivemomentumacrosstheregioninadvancingnewenergytransitionpolicies,resultingforexampleina400%increaseinrenewableenergyinstalledcapacityandinvestmentsoverthepastdecade.CountriesacrosstheregionareincreasinglyprioritizinganaccelerationofactionstheachievementofSustainableDevelopmentGoal(SDG)7onEnergyandtheNationallyDeterminedContributions(NDCs)undertheParisAgreement.UNDPisproudtohavesupportedtheenhancementofNDCsacrosstheregioninrecentyears,aprocessthatcatalyzedgreaterlevelsofambitioninmanycountriesforanenergytransition.ThenationalNDCclimateplans,alongsidenationalenergytransitionpolicies,servenowasplatformsforaction,ascountriesseekalargerroleforcleanenergyinvestmentsasameanstodiversifytheireconomies,generatenewhigh-techknowledge-basedjobs,andreducetheenergyintensityofgrowth.Intheoilexportingeconomiesoftheregion,theenergytransitionisbeingharnessedasameansofeconomicdiversification,reducingtheenergyintensityofgrowthandhighpercapitacarbonfootprints.Inmanyothercountries,energytransitionpoliciesandlowcarbontechnologiesarehelpingacceleratelocaldevelopmentgoals,buildingresilienceofpovertyreductionefforts,whileinconflictaffectedcommunitiesaccesstodecentralizedsolarsolutionsishelpingclosetheenergygapforcriticalservices,poweringbasicneeds,schoolsandclinicsandenablingrestorationoflivesandlivelihoods.TheUnitedNationsDevelopmentProgramme(UNDP)isexpandingitsroleasaprovideroftechnicalassistanceacrosstheArabregiontosupportcountriesintheseefforts.UNDPservesastheUNslargestimplementerofgrantassistanceforagreentransition,withover$300m
