landmarketproblemsaresocialinnovators.Organizational,governmentandbusinesspracticesthatbetterengageandinvestinthesecommunitiescanactivelyaddresssystemicinequitiesandaccessnovelcommercialopportunitiestheycouldnotgenerateinternally.Innovativefoundersandcollectivesarebuildingsuccessfulcommercialsolutionstothestructuralchallengespresentedbyracialandethnicinequity.Thesemodelsarecreatingsharedprosperityformmunitiesandbusinesses.Theyarealsobeginningtoshiftunderlyingbusinesspractices-fromhiringtoproductdesign-inwaysthatdrivemeasurableoutmesandbringaboutmoreequitable,justandprosperouseconomicsystems.Thisreportpresentsthreepathwaysforsocialinnovators,companiesandgovernmentstoleverageracialequityopportunitiesacrossdifferentbusinesspractices.Basedoncasestudiesofcurrentinnovationswithprovenimpact,eachpathwayrepresentsasociallyinnovativeapproachtovaluecreationthataddressesinequitiesattheirrts:-Thefirstpathway,Expandingmarkets,centresonsocialinnovatorsprovidingproductsandservicesthatbettermeettheneedsofcommunitiesandgeographiccontexts.Theinnovationsfeatureulast-mile"deliverymodelsthatempowerlocalassetownersandprovideaccesstonewcustomerbases-fromBlackand1.atinxZ1.atinoZHispanicneighbourhoodsinUScitiestoNigeriansmallholderfarmersfromethnicminoritygroups.-Thesecondpathway,Unlockingtalent,spotlightssocialinnovatorscreatingmoreequitablehiringpractices.Sialinnovationschallengehistoricalmodelsofassessingcandidateriskandpotential-reshapingemploymentopportunitiesatalllevelsandremovingbarrierstoonboardinghigh-performingemployees,unlockingpreviouslyuntappedtalentpoolsforbusinesses.-Thethirdpathway,Broadeningnetworks,focusesonsocialinnovatorsbuildingmoreinclusiveanddiversesupplierecosystems.Theinnovationsfeaturesuccessful,grassroots-ledeffortstoequitablyengagewiththeskillsandassetsofvendorsthathavebeenhistoricallyexcludedandeconomicallymarginalized.FromdigitallibrariesforIndigenousarttofairsforAfro-Brazilianproducts,innovatorsareredefiningwhobenefitsfromandisrepresentedinglobalbusinessnetworks.Bypartneringwithsocialinnovators,corporateleaderscanbothgrowtheirbusinessesandplayanessentialroleinacceleratingprogressonracialandethnicequity.Corporatecommitmentstoadvanceracialandethnicequityhaveoftentakentheformofinternaldiversity,equityandinclusion(DEI)initiativesorphilanthropiccorporatesocialresponsibility(CSR)1bothofwhichcanbeimpactedbydynamicpoliticalenvironments.However,somecorporateleadersarefindingthatpartnershipswithsocialinnovatorscancreatemorelastingbenefitsformmunitiesandnovelcommercialopportunities.Socialinnovationissparkedbytheidentificationofsocialandcommercialchallengesnotfullyornotsystemicallyaddressedbyexistingsocialormmercialactivity.Therefore,socialinnovatorsfrequentlycreatebusiness-facingsolutionsthatofferbotheconomicandsocialvalue,includingtheadvancementofracialandethnicequity.Acrossthestagesofscalinginnovationsforracialandethnicequity,corporateandpublicsectorleadershaveopportunitiestopartnerwithinnovators.Thesestagesinclude:- Seed-Socialinnovationsatthisstageareexploringrootcauses,solutionsandmarketopportunities.Solutionsmaystillbenascentideasormodelssubjecttofurtherproof.- Refine-Progressingfrominitialideas,innovationsbecomedefinedbusinessmodels.Thisstagefocusesontestingsocialinnovationsandbuildingthecapabilitiesneededforfuturescale-up.- Scale-Astheyincreaseinmaturity,innovationsexpandtoreachbroaderpopulationsorsectors.Privateandpublicsectorpartnersarealsoincreasinglyadoptingandmoredeeplyembeddingthem.Mainstream-Socialinnovationsultimatelymovebeyonddiscreteinitiativesandfundamentallychangebusinessmodels,productsandservices,andapproachestoinnovation.Theyinfluencehowcompaniesaddresstheneedsofeconomicallymarginalizedcommunities.FIGURE1:StagesofsocialinnovationandcorrespondingpartnershipsOVerVieWUnderstandingbarriersandDevelopingmodelsandIncreasingmodelmaturityTransformingmarketstoidentifyingsolutionsgrowingcapabilitiesandadoptionnewstatusquoSocialandcommercialvaluecreationPartnershipstoaccelerategrowthshould.ExpandthereachandembeddingofinnovationsConvenediversestakeholdersforsharedproblemsolvingHonesolutionsandgrowsharedcapabilitiesShiftbusinesspracticesandresourceflowsbeyondsinglepartnershipsThereisanimportantcallforsocialinnovators,businessesandgovernmentstopartnerinaddressingsystemiceconomicexclusion.Platformsforglobalcollaborationplayanimportantroleinseedingcollaborationbuttheonusisonleaderstocometogetherandact.Throughcollectiveeffortstoadvancesocialinnovation,atransformativeshiftcanbemade-towardsaneconomyofsharedsocialandcommercialvaluebyemphasizingbusinesspracticesthataddresseconomicdisfunctionsattheirroot,particularlythoseexacerbatedbyracialandethnicinequality.KeyconceptsandtermsTheseconceptsandtermsareshapingtheglobalconversationonracialandethnicequity.Racialandethnicinequitiesvaryinnameandisdefinedbyasingleidentityorbythenatureacrossgeographies.Thisincludesrace-marginalizationtheyexperience.Wherepossible,baseddynamics,suchasanti-BlackdiscriminationitreferstospecificcommunitiesinthetermsusedinWesternEurope,aswellasinequitiesalongbysocialinnovatorsthemselves,whichmaydifferethniclines,suchastheeconomicexclusionofbasedonthelocalcontext.ThisapproachleadstocertaingroupsandtribesinEastAfrica.8Asaacleararticulationofthechallengeaffectingpeopleresult,organizationsusedifferentandsometimesinlocalcontextswhileacknowledgingthattherearecontestingterminology,asinthecaseof"1.atinx"commondynamicsacrossglobalexpressionsofand*41.atinoa"intheUS.9racism.Thisreportaimstobepreciseandrace/ethnicityTable1outlinesdefinitionsoftheconceptsusedinexplicitwhilerecognizingthatnoindividualthisreport.TAB1.E1ConceptdefinitionsTermDefinitionrporationsCorporationsareeconomicinstitutionsthat,throughtheirbusinessoperations,playasignificantroleinshapingeconomicandsocialsystemsonnationalandglobalscales.10ethnicityAclassificationofpeoplebasedonasharedunderstandingofhistory,territorialorigins,ancestryandculturalcharacteristicssuchaslanguageandreligion,oftenvaryingbycontextandself-identification.,lastmileIndividualsandpopulationswhoaretypicallythefurthestfrom,mostdifficulttoreach,orlasttobenefitfromaproductorservice.'2powerTheabilityofindividualsandcommunitiestoshapetheirdestiniesthroughagencyoveroutcomes-includingthroughresources,norms,narratives,practices,lawsandpolicies.13proximityThelivedexperienceof,andmeaningfulrelationshipswith,communitiesorsocialissuesbeingserved,helpingtocreateexpertiseandtrust.14raceThesocialconstructthatcategorizespeopleintogroupsbasedonphenotypiccharacteristicssuchashairtexture,facialfeaturesandskintone,andgeographicancestry.15racialandethnicThestateinwhichoutcomesarenotpredictedbyraceorethnicityduetotheintentionalpracticeofshiftingpolicies,practices,systemsandstructurestoensurepeoplewithmarginalizedidentitieshaveequitableopportunitiesandequity(REE)outcomes.16scaleTheexpansion,replication,adaptationandsustainabilityofsuessfulpolicies,programmesorprojectstoreachmorepeopleorplaces,therebyincreasingsocialimpact.57sharedvalueThecreationofeconomicvalueforacompanybyaddressingsocietalandenvironmentalchallengesasbusinessopportunities.'0TermDefinitionsocialenterprises/innovationsOrganizationsthatputsocialorenvironmentalpurposesfirstandoftenemployanentrepreneurial,for-profitandinnovativewaytoprovidegoodsandservices.'9socialinnovation"Theprocessofinventing,securingsupportfor,andimplementingnovelsolutionstosocialneedsandproblems."20stakeholdercapitalismAformofcapitalismwerecompaniesconsidertheneedsofallstakeholdersandsocietywhileseekinglong-termvaluecreation.21Obstaclesthatllectivelyanddisproportionatelyaffectaspecificgroupandcontinueorpreservedifferencesinstructuralbarriersoutcomes.Thesecanbe"policies,practicesandothernormsthatfavouranadvantagedgroupwhilesystematicallydisadvantaginganother."22Atermusedthroughoutthereportreferringtothenormalizationandlegitimizationofdynamics,suchashistorical,systemicracism23cultural,institutionalandinterpersonal,thatdisadvantagespecificracialandethnicgroupswhileperpetuatingpositionsofpowerforspecificgroups(e.g.white,"higher-caste").24systemschange/transformationConfrontinginterconnectedrootcausesratherthansymptomsofsocialorenvironmentalchallengesbytransformingstructures,customs,mindsets,powerdynamicsandpolicies.25IntroductionGlobaleconomicopportunitiesarecreatedwhencommercialactivityaddresseseconomicexclusionandunlocksassetsineconomicallymarginalizedcommunities.ThesharedchallengeEconomicexclusionisbothalocalandglobalchallengedrivenbysocial,historical,politicalandinstitutionalfactors.Manycommunitiesareexcludedandunderrepresented,curtailingtheexponentialvalueopportunitiesforsocietyandtheglobaleconomy.Forexample,intheUSandtheUnitedKingdom,percapitawealthforBlackpeopleislessthanasixthofthatoftheirwhitecounterpartsandthegapisincreasing.”InCanada,thepovertyrateofIndigeno
