ChinafsscientificexpeditionbeginsNorthPoleresearchByZHAOLEIUpdated:2023-09-0713:41f*ill+China,s13thscientificexpeditiontotheArcticOceanhasreachedtheNorthPoleregion.PChina's13thscientificexpeditiontotheArcticOceanhasreachedtheNorthPoleregionandbegunresearchwork,accordingtotheMinistryOfNaturalResources.SincearrivingintheregiononboardtheXuelong2onTuesday,researchershavecarriedoutcomprehensivesurveysontheatmosphere,hydrology,biologyandseaice,theministrysaidinanewsreleaseonThursday.Thevesselisthecountry'sfirstdomesticallybuiltpolaricebreaker.Theresearchwillhelpfillthegapinthecountry'sdatabaseabouttheNorthPoleregion,enablescientiststofurtherunderstandtheprocessofchangesinseaiceandoceancurrentsandexpandknowledgeabouttherapidenvironmentalchangesintheArcticOceananditsecologicalresponse.ItwillalsoprovidedatasupportforeffectivelycopingwiththeimpactofglobalclimatechangeonChina,theministrynoted.China,s13thscientificexpeditiontotheArcticOceanhasreachedtheNorthPoleregion.PTheexpeditionteamsetsailfromShanghaionJuly12.Theyareexpectedtotravelnearly15,500nauticalmiles(28,700kilometers)beforereturningtoShanghaiinlateSeptember.TheprojectwillfocusonthecentralsectionofthePacificArcticRegionandtheGakkelRidge.Researchersarescheduledtoperformahostoftaskssuchaslong-termobservationofkeyenvironmentalelements,geologicalandgeophysicalsurveysofGakkelRidge,atmospheric,seaice,marineandsubsurfaceenvironmentalsurveys,aswellasinvestigationsofbiomes,resourcesandpollutants.TheChineseresearcherswillalsoworkwiththeirpeersfromcountriesincludingRussiaandThailandonrelevantprojects.
