3、mwouldlikelydamageanumberoftemplesanddestroyculturalrelicsthatwereanimportantpartofEgyptsculturalheritage.Afterlisteningtothescientistswhohadstudiedtheproblem,andcitizenswholivednearthedam,thegovernmentturnedtotheUnitedNationsforhelpin1959.AcommitteewasestablishedtolimitdamagetotheEgyptianbuildingsa
4、ndpreventthelossofculturalrelics.Thegroupaskedfbrcontributionsfromdifferentdepartmentsandraisedfundswithintheinternationalcommunity.Expertsinvestigatedtheissue,conductedseveraltests,andthenmadeaproposalfbrhowthebuildingscouldbesaved.Finally,adocumentwassigned,andtheworkbeganin1960.Theprojectbroughtt
5、ogethergovernmentsandenvironmentalistsfromaroundtheworldTemplesandotherculturalsitesweretakendownpiecebypiece,andthenmovedandputbacktogetheragaininaplacewheretheyweresafefromthewater.In1961,Germanengineersmovedthefirsttemple.Overthenext20years,thousandsofengineersandworkersrescued22templesandcountle
6、ssculturalrelics.Fiftycountriesdonatednearly$80milliontotheproject.Whentheprojectendedin1980,itwasconsideredagreatsuccess.Notonlyhadthecountriesfoundapathtothefuturethatdidnotrunovertherelicsofthepast,buttheyhadalsoIeamtthatitwaspossibleforcountriestoworktogethertobuildabettertomorrow.Thespiritofthe
