2、dholdinginventory.Thereareseveralschoolsofthoughtthatviewinventoryanditsfunctiondifferently.Thesewillbeaddressedlater,butfirstwepresentafoundationtofacilitatethereadersunderstandingofinventoryanditsfunctionInventorymanagementisinventorymanagementinshort.Asanimportantinventoryofliquidassets,itsexiste

3、nceisboundtotakeupalotOfliquidity.Ingeneral,inventoriesofindustrialenterprisesaccountedforabout30%ofthetotalassetsofcommercialcirculationenterprisesisevenhigher,themanagementofutilizationisdirectlyrelatedtotheoccupationofthelevelofcorporatefundsandassetefficiency.Therefore,abusinesstomaintainhighpro

4、fitability,shouldbeattachedgreatimportancetoinventorymanagement.Inventorymanagementatdifferentlevels,thecompanysaverageoccupancyleveloffundingisabigdifference.Throughtheimplementationofproperinventorymanagementmethodstoreducetheleveloftheaverageamountoffundsusedtoimprovetheinventoryturnoverrateandto

12、lacingofanorder(eitherapurchaseorderoraproductionorderissuedtotheshoporIhefactoryfloor)andactuallyreceivingthegoodsordered.Ifasupplier(anexternalfirmoraninternaldepartmentorplant)cannotsupplytherequiredgoodsondemand,thentheclientfirmmustkeepaninventoryoftheneededgoods.Thelongertheleadtime,thelargert

13、hequantityofgoodsthefirmmustcarryininventory.Ajust-in-time(JIT)manufacturingfirm,suchasNissaninSmyrna,Tennessee,canmaintainextremelylowlevelsofinventory.Nissantakesdeliveryontruckseatsasmanyas18timesperday.However,steelmillsmayhavealeadtimeofuptothreemonths.Thatmeansthatafirmthatusessteelproducedatt

14、hemillmustplaceordersatleastthreemonthsinadvanceoftheirneed.Inordertokeeptheiroperationsrunninginthemeantime,anon-handinventoryofthreemonthssteelrequirementswouldbenecessary.2.5 HedgeInventorycanalsobeusedasahedgeagainstpriceincreasesandinflation.Salesmenroutinelycallpurchasingagentsshortlybeforeapr

15、iceincreasegoesintoeffect.Thisgivesthebuyerachancetopurchasematerial,inexcessofcurrentneed,atapricethatislowerthanitwouldbeifthebuyerwaileduntilafterthepriceincreaseoccurs.2.6 SmoothingrequirementsSometimesinventoryisusedtosmoothdemandrequirementsinamarketwheredemandissomewhaterratic.Considerthedema

16、ndforecastandproductionscheduleoutlinedinTablelNoticehowtheuseofinventoryhasallowedthefirmtomaintainasteadyrateofoutput(thusavoidingthecostofhiringandtrainingnewpersonnel),whilebuildingupinventoryinanticipationofanincreaseindemand.Infact,thisisoftencalledanticipationinventory.Inessence,theuseofinven

17、toryhasallowedthefirmtomovedemandrequirementstoearlierperiods,thussmoothingthedemand.Chapter III ControllingInventoryOftenfirmsaregivenapricediscountwhenpurchasinglargequantitiesofagood.Thisalsofrequentlyresultsininventoryinexcessofwhatiscurrentlyneededtomeetdemand.However,ifthediscountissufficientt

18、ooffsettheextraholdingcostincurredasaresultoftheexcessinventory,thedecisiontobuythelargequantityisjustified.Firmsthatcarryhundredsoreventhousandsofdifferentpartnumberscanbefacedwiththeimpossibletaskofmonitoringtheinventorylevelsofeachpartnumber.Inordertofacilitatethis,manyfirmsuseanABCapproach.ABCan

19、alysisisbasedonParetoAnalysis,alsoknownasthen8020rule.The80/20comesfromParetosfindingthat20percentofthepopulacepossessed80percentofthewealth.Fromaninventoryperspectiveitcanrestatedthusly:approximately20percentofallinventoryitemsrepresent80percentofinventorycosts.Therefore,afirmcancontrol80percentofi

20、tsinventorycostsbymonitoringandcontrolling20percentofitsinventory.But,ithastobethecorrect20percent.Thetop20percentofthefirmsmostcostlyitemsaretermedA11items(thisshouldapproximatelyrepresent80percentoftotalinventorycosts).Itemsthatareextremelyinexpensiveorhavelowdemandaretermed11Citems,with,B*itemsfa

21、llinginbetweenAandCitems.Thepercentagesmayvarywitheachfirm,butBitemsusuallyrepresentabout30percentofthetotalinventoryitemsand15percentofthecosts.Citemsgenerallyconstitute50percentofallinventoryitemsbutonlyaround5percentofthecosts.ByclassifyingeachinventoryitemasanA,BorCthefirmcandeterminetheresource

22、s(time,effortandmoney)todedicatetoeachitem.UsuallythismeansthatthefirmmonitorsAitemsverycloselybutcancheckonBandCitemsonaperiodicbasis(forexample,monthlyforBitemsandquarterlyforCitems).AnothercontrolmethodrelatedtotheABCconceptiscyclecounting.Cyclecountingisusedinsteadofthetraditional11once-a-yearin

23、ventorycountwherefirmsshutdownforashortperiodoftimeandphysicallycountallinventoryassetsinanattempttoreconcileanypossiblediscrepanciesintheirinventoryrecords.Whencyclecountingisusedthefirmiscontinuallytakingaphysicalcountbutnotoftotalinventory.Afirmmayphysicallycountacertainsectionoftheplantorwarehou

24、se,movingontoothersectionsuponcompletion,untiltheentirefacilityiscounted.Thentheprocessstartsalloveragain.ThefirmmayalsochoosetocountalltheAitems,thentheBitems,andfinallytheCitems.Certainly,thecountingfrequencywillvarywiththeclassificationofeachitem.Inotherwords,Aitemmaybecountedmonthly,Bitemsquarte

25、rly,andCitemsyearly.Inadditiontherequiredaccuracyofinventoryrecordsmayvaryaccordingtoclassification,withAitemsrequiringthemostaccuraterecordkeeping.Chapter IV SummaryTimeinventorymanagementisnowfacedwiththedefects.Theadvent,throughaltruismorlegislation,ofenvironmentalmanagementhasaddedanewdimensiont

26、oinventorymanagement-reversesupplychainlogistics.Environmentalmanagementhasexpandedthenumberofinventorytypesthatfirmshavetocoordinate.Inadditiontorawmaterials,work-in-process,finishedgoods,andMROgoods,firmsnowhavetodealwithpost-consumeritemssuchasscrap,returnedgoods,reusableorrecyclablecontainers,an

27、danynumberofitemsthatrequirerepair,reuse,recycling,orsecondaryuseinanotherproduct.Retailershavethesametypeproblemsdealingwithinventorythathasbeenreturnedduetodefectivematerialormanufacture,poorfit,finish,orcolor,oroutrightIchangedmymindresponsesfromcustomers.Finally,supplychainmanagementhashadaconsi
